Gudar-Javalambre Birding Report

  • By David Cayuela

Yesterday we had the privilege to guide a bird watching trip arround Gúdar-Javalambre with José Gerstle, an experienced Chilean birder who was in Teruel for a week. He was very interested in our birds of prey and mammals.

We began with the typical Cliffs and Rocky Mountains of The Iberian Sistem landscape, where we enjoy with “The Queen”, a spectacular Golden Eagle, a lot of Griffon Vultures and also a groups of Iberian Ibex.  After that, and very close over our heads, a couple of Peregrine Falcons. The white male contrasts clearly with a sp. Brookei female. We continued with our 4×4 to the top of the mountains with a great sighting of several Choughs and Goshawk circling with difficulties in a windy day.

We came back to nice small town of Rubielos de Mora (Teruel) for a coffe and warm up our hands. It was only 5 degrees with strongly wind but… all raptors were flying!!!  We drove to the second stop: our Hide Photography for Griffon Vultures and Red Kites. In just only 5 minutes tens of vultures landed in front of the hide delighting José’s camera. Such a great pictures Guy!!!

With a wingspan close to 3 metres and weighing 8 kilos, Griffon Vulture  is one of the largest raptors in Spain. Its amazing!!!

But we were very lucky to have nice views of 5 Red Kites flying over the Vultures, waiting as a Ravens for the small pieces of meat.  José was fortunate enough the enjoy views of spectacular flights. It seemed that Red Kite said…”Are you looking to me?”
